If your Indian Railways ticket is on the Waiting List (WL), RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation), or confirmed without a coach and berth number, the single most important milestone before your journey is Reservation Chart Preparation.

Once the reservation chart is prepared for your boarding station, Indian Railways locks final seat and berth allocations, sends confirmation SMS updates, opens Current Booking for any remaining vacant seats, and triggers automatic refunds for fully waitlisted e-tickets.

What Are the First and Second Reservation Charts in Indian Railways?

Indian Railways prepares reservation charts in two stages before a train departs from its originating station or designated Remote Charting Location (RCL):

  • First Reservation Chart (Primary Chart): Prepared 8 to 10 hours before departure (or the previous evening by 08:00 PM – 09:00 PM for morning trains). Most RAC and Waiting List upgrades, quota releases (such as unused Senior Citizen, Ladies, or VIP/HO quotas), and coach/berth assignments happen during the First Chart.
  • Second Reservation Chart (Final Chart): Prepared approximately 30 minutes (ranging from 15 to 30 minutes) before scheduled departure. It incorporates Current Booking reservations, last-minute cancellations, and any final RAC/WL confirmations before the chart is handed over to the onboard TTE (Travelling Ticket Examiner).

Official Indian Railways Chart Preparation Timings by Departure Slot

Under the updated Railway Board advance charting guidelines, the First Reservation Chart timing depends on your train's scheduled departure time from its charting station:

Train Departure Time Slot First Reservation Chart Prepared By Second (Final) Chart Prepared By
05:00 AM to 02:00 PM (Morning & Forenoon Trains) Previous Evening by 08:00 PM – 09:00 PM IST 30 to 15 minutes before departure
02:01 PM to 11:59 PM (Afternoon & Night Trains) At least 8 hours before scheduled departure 30 to 15 minutes before departure
12:00 AM to 04:59 AM (Post-Midnight & Early Morning Trains) Previous Evening by 08:00 PM – 09:00 PM IST 30 to 15 minutes before departure

Why Morning Trains Are Charted the Night Before: If your train departs at 06:30 AM, preparing the chart 8 hours earlier would mean locking seats at 10:30 PM or midnight—leaving passengers unsure overnight whether their ticket is confirmed and preventing timely cancellations. By preparing the chart between 08:00 PM and 09:00 PM the previous evening, passengers and travel agents know their exact berth status before going to sleep.

What Is a "Remote Charting Station" for Intermediate Boarding Halts?

Long-distance trains do not prepare a separate chart for every small halt along a 1,500 km route. Instead, Indian Railways divides a train's route into Remote Charting Locations (RCLs) or charting zones.

Real Example: Suppose you are boarding Train 12952 (New Delhi – Mumbai Central Tejas Rajdhani Express) from an intermediate station:

  • If your boarding station is a smaller halt that falls under the Vadodara or Surat remote charting zone, your ticket's chart is finalized at the exact time the chart for its parent Remote Charting Station is prepared—not 30 minutes before the train reaches your halt.
  • When you search your train in the RailAgents Train Chart Preparation Time Tool, it automatically displays your boarding station's scheduled departure, platform number, and its linked Remote Charting Station.

What Happens Immediately After the First Chart Is Prepared?

  1. Coach & Berth Numbers Are Assigned: Passengers holding CNF (Confirmed) or upgraded RAC/WL tickets receive their final coach and seat numbers (for example, B2, 24 Upper). You can verify this anytime using our Live PNR Status Check.
  2. Current Booking Window Opens: If any berths remain vacant after
